All life is energy, and for energy to become productive and powerful, it must be harnessed.
It must be controlled, directed, towards productive efforts, avoiding self-destructive tendencies.
Our effort in understanding, controlling, and taking action in these 5 areas are the way we control, direct, and push on these areas, so that they can grow, and consequently, bring forward their benefits into our life.
What are these 5 areas to control for a better life?
Habits
“How we do anything, is how we do everything.”
When it comes down to it, we are our habits. The little things that we do regularly, on a moment-by-moment, day-to-day basis, shapes our lives, and ultimately, determine the course of our future.
Meaning, the greatness we achieve is founded upon the habits that we have.
Because nobody achieves greatness without working for it, day after day, year after year.
And people who have achieved great things, have habits that support them.
They have habits that allow them to do what they do best.
They have habits on what to do first, and how to get themselves going.
They have habits to take care of themselves, and to keep them motivated and inspired.
They have habits to help them deal with failure and frustration.
They have habits to help them continue to learn, develop, and improve themselves.
And this isn’t just about doing.
This is also about habits of thinking.
What you think, and how you think, are also habits ingrained and developed through constant use.
What you believe, is what will become reality.
Beliefs
What you believe in, and how you believe in them, is something you can control, to have a better life.
Our beliefs shape how we interpret the world, and as a consequence, our experience of it.
I used to go around believing, telling myself that “my life sucks.” And because I repeated that so frequently, I had come to believe it.
And when I had come to believe it, all I saw and experienced around me, was evidence that my life indeed sucked.
And because my life sucked, I was frequently choosing to escape just to feel good, or to give up, because I saw no hope for myself.
The belief “my life sucks”, was so far, so against what I wanted for my life, which was to live a meaningful life, making a deep, positive impact in the lives of people.
Realizing that my beliefs did not support my goals and dreams, I then had to control, and to change, what I believed in.
When I then, kept telling myself that “I am grateful for a wonderful life”, slowly, I then began to see evidence of that, and slowly, but surely, my experience of my world and my days began to change.
Into more meaningful, hopeful, and genuinely thankful, days and moments.
What we believe, is what we experience.
Is what will come true.
Finances
Like the energy we use to decide, concentrate, and act, money is also energy.
Money flows, and is neither good or bad, and yet, it has come to mean so much to different people.
Money, like energy, is also extremely responsive to control and direction.
If you are able to control and direct your finances, then it will want to flow towards you and grow.
But if you neglect controlling and directing your finances, and just let it be, or when you spend uncontrollably, then money will want to flow away from you.
What gets measured, gets managed. And what gets managed, grows.
Start from the basics. Find out how much you are earning. Keep track of how much you are spending. Are you spending more than you earn? How much debt do you have, and what’s your plan to pay it back?
The clearer picture you have of your finances, the easier it will be to control and direct it.
And then, the easier it will be to grow it.
It’s also good practice to build effective habits that will help you manage money (like tracking what you spend), and to correct beliefs that don’t help you (such as the pervasive belief that money is the root of all evil, which is false).
Relationships
Your relationships is also an area that you can control, to have a better life.
Put simply, are you spending time with people who genuinely love you, inspire you, and keep you accountable?
Are you spending time with positive people? People who push you, invite you, inspire you to become a better version of yourself?
Or do you spend your time with negative people? People who constantly put you down, drag you through drama, despair, and hopelessness? People who are like leeches, suck your energy dry, and become dependent on you.
Spend more time with positive people, and spend less time with negative people.
Spend more time with people who are wiser, stronger, more hopeful, more loving, and more obsessed than you. Try to look for clues on how they became such people, and what worked for them.
Also spend time with people who look up to you, are needing help and guidance, and are genuinely interested to learn and invest in themselves. Share with them clues and what worked for you, to get to where you are.
Better relationships requires better communication, and communication determines the quality of the life you live.
Learn how to communicate to yourself, and to others, clearly, directly, and lovingly.
Remember, it’s not only relationships with other people that you have to control and take care of.
More importantly, there’s the relationship with yourself, that you also have to attend to.
Your Direction
When people say that they have no choice, they are both literally and figuratively, putting themselves in chains.
In any given moment, you always have a choice. It may not be in what you do, but always, in how you think, and believe, and how you choose to experience the situation.
Your direction in life is something you have to take control of, if you want to get to where you want to go.
And to do that, you have to manage and control your decisions, and your actions that will support and follow-through on those decisions.
Life is a marathon, and not a sprint. Your current direction is decided by the many decisions you have made in the past.
And likewise, your direction going forward into the future, is decided by the many decisions you will be making, starting now.
To where are you going? And how would you make decisions, every day, so that each day you live, contributes to you getting to where you want to go?
This also means, deciding first, where is it that you want to go? What is the end goal, the direction that you want?
Because, if you don’t know where you’re going, then it doesn’t matter where you go.
Live a life you designed
Taking control of your life, is like taking control of a sailing ship. You have to put yourself into the best possible position, using what you have, to the fullest, so you can go where you want to go.
Otherwise, you would end up drifting, with no specific direction, and no results and forward motion.
You would be stuck. And people who are stuck, don’t realize that happens because there are aspects in their life that they give up control over.
Or don’t realize that they do have control over.
Start with these 5 areas first.
Start by making deliberate decisions.
You always have a choice.
Choose to take control.
