Coming from a dinner with executives who were well over the age of retirement, I was trying to connect and make sense all of the stories and insights that they accumulated over the years, and shared with me.
There was one common theme to all they said, and it surprised me.
It wasn’t about building a legacy.
It wasn’t about money, or skills alone.
And it definitely wasn’t about vision and passion.
What’s the one thing that we should keep on building?
Relationships
If there was one thing these moguls and captains of industry shared, it was the importance of relationships.
Every business has a relationship with their customer.
Every boss has a relationship with their staff, and superiors.
Every part of our body, has a relationship with another part of our body.
Same with the different parts of our lives.
And I learned about this the hard way. For the longest time I’ve always had issues with my lower back.
This has contributed to damaging my quality of life, and even my ability to do simple tasks, and for the most part, to have confidence going into different situations.
And to get back to growing and getting better, I ultimately had to repair my relationship with my body, and began to take care of myself more.
I also began repairing my relationship with myself, also taking care of my mental health and self-esteem, and began to accept me for who I was.
If there’s one thing that will improve my life and yours, it’s building relationships.
Quality, not quantity
No one will care if you have a million relationships, but all of them shit, and all with people who hate you.
Building relationships is also about positivity, and having relationships that support each other, and help build each other up.
What determines whether the relationship will be good, isn’t the quantity of relationships that you have, ultimately, but the quality of them.
If you have one happy customer, then that’s the start. It opens up opportunities for you to have more and more.
Likewise, if you have one unhappy customer, then that’s a possible reason for other people to not try your product.
They may like your product now, but they won’t be loyal, if you don’t have a good relationship with them.
A good friend of mine is in the interior design and renovation business. He tell me how he makes money – not by sheer volume, but by building, and taking care of his business and personal relationships. Those eventually pave the way for him to make sales.
People won’t care about you. But if you show them that you sincerely care for them, then they might care about you too.
We’ve got to start caring.
It’s about building relationships
With ourselves, and with other people.
I daresay that the quality of our live is determined by the quality of our relationships, with other people, and especially, with ourselves.
What do we build these things in our lives for?
We build wealth, if only to better the quality of life and relationships we have with close people, and with ourselves.
We work out, to strengthen the relationship with our bodies, which will allow us to build better relationships with other people.
Build better relationships, and it will connect and serve us all, well.
