I’ve found myself despairing, deep down in the pits for so long, I didn’t know what to do anymore.
When I was in that state, it was hard to get out. Like trying to get out of quicksand.
The harder you flail and struggle, the deeper you sink in.
It doesn’t have to be that way. You have to use small steps, and deliberately, do what would help get you out of that pit, that state.
You can’t get to changing your life, if you don’t feel that you can actually do it.
And it’s not about the money that you spend to make things happen, or to get things. It’s about what you do, and it’s impact on you.
What are some simple tips to make you feel better?
Exercise
I’ve heard from Tony Robbins, one of the best coaches in the world, that emotion, comes from motion.
What our bodies do, has an effect on how we feel and think, and not just the opposite.
I was always taught that what you think, and feel, would show in your actions and body. What surprised me, was that by letting your body have physical activity, you can positively impact your mood and feelings.
I first experienced this back in college, when I was a runner. I’d get a high feeling after running, a natural high. Then I stopped running, and then slowly, I got weaker, and sluggish.
And when I was failing, and couldn’t get anything to work, I just cooped myself up in my house, not doing any physical activity.
I wasted away, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
When I started to slowly, and in small steps, build a habit of physical activity, I started feeling better, and more confident.
Take a walk for 5 minutes, or do 5 pushups a day, to start.
Just keep it going, get your body and blood flowing.
Don’t just be in your head all the time.
Reminders
Because the number one reason why most people don’t go after their dreams, is because they forget.
I forgot what was important for me.
In the hustle of daily errands and minor tasks, I forgot.
In the little things that I do and chooses, I forgot.
When asked why are my goals important, I can answer that clearly, confidently.
Yet with a small tinge of regret and “I should’ves and wouldve’s.”
I forgot.
And in the middle of my despair and darkness, I forget what is good with me, and what qualities I already have, and want to have.
Don’t forget. Always remind yourself of these things.
Take control of your environment, so that you are always reminded of what is good in you, what you want, what you declare to be true, and why all of this is important.
Put posters where you can see them.
Change your wallpapers, screens, backgrounds, on all your devices.
Write down how you feel everyday, and how you want to be feeling. What do you want to happen in your day?
Change your passwords. You type them in everyday, might as well make them empowering reminders.
Don’t forget. Take time to set up systems to remind you.
Try new things
Nothing destroys self-confidence and good moods faster than being stuck in your own cycle of helplessness and non-validation.
If you want to feel good about yourself, go out and try new things.
Be like a child again, experimenting, learning, curious, and for whom wrong and failure doesn’t mean a negative label on you, your abilities, or your life.
Learn a new skill, or travel to a new place.
Sign-up for a new class. Learn a new hobby.
Meet up with friends. Real friends who look out for you, would understand you, and support you.
You’re not alone in this world.
Try new things, enjoy, and discover what’s new. Even reading a book can be a new, paradigm-shifting experience.
Break the rut of always doing what you’re doing. Go for something new.
Go for small steps
It doesn’t have to be big.
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
It does have to be meaningful, to you.
At the end of the day, how you feel, is a choice you can make.
No matter what happens, our actions are what we can choose, which can be separate from what our emotions are telling us to do.
Choose to feel better. Start small, and keep going.
